Serpentine twists and turns. Nail-biting suspense and tension-filled moments that keep you on edge. A masterstroke finale… Director SriramRaghavan delivers an out-of-the-box, absorbing tale that teases your mind, besides keeping you engaged and entertained. MerryChristmas could’ve done with faster pacing and slight trimming for an enhanced impact… Also, this film depends entirely on a strong word of mouth, so don’t expect fireworks at the BO on arrival

On the whole, Merry Christmas is an entertaining suspense drama and will be liked by the classes and city audience. Its slow start will tell on its business, though.
Ratings: 3.5/5 Review - NDTV
Intriguing, stimulating, gripping and gently challenging, Merry Christmas is everything you would want a thriller to be. It bewitches even when it baffles.

‘Merry Christmas’ is a terrific start to 2024 and a welcome break from the tailor-made cinema that feels repetitive. Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif’s pairing is the ace of spade that makes the film a sure-shot winner.

A time that was, in a city that was Bombay. A balmy Christmas Eve. Two lonely strangers. Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas delivers what it promises — an aching mix of nostalgia and romance, intrigue and suspense — in a solid start to the new year.

In the coming days, one word that’s sure to be associated with Merry Christmas is ‘slow burn’. In the past few years, we, as an audience, have become so accustomed to a fast-paced narrative that anything remotely unhurried feels like it’s demanding a lot from us. In Merry Christmas, Sriram Raghavan takes his own sweet time to tell the tale of a woman in an unhappy marriage and a man with a mysterious past while also making sure that his characters have abundant time to breathe, talk, and even go for a walk around town.

While it has been established that audiences can and will sit down for longer films, the interest must be there to hold them along. The pace of the feature is unhurried, when there is an absolute need to establish certain markers within the first half. Murder mystery fans might enjoy the slow buildup, but most Bollywood viewers aren’t that patient. Merry Christmas picks up speed in the last 20 minutes where there’s plenty of nervous conflict and edginess to be resolved. Sriram Raghavan’s film had the right take on the perfect crime, but does it exist?

On the whole, MERRY CHRISTMAS is a well-made thriller and is laced with a fine performance by Vijay Sethupathi. At the box office, it’ll need a strong word of mouth to succeed as it appeals only to the multiplex audience in the urban areas.
